The Science of Promotion – Silent Tests Part 1

Desmond Nikanor

We have been discussing the science of promotion by laying out some of the constant things that happen when one is about to get promoted.

The first is that the individual would begin to redefine what a promotion is by making it a broader, more internal process as opposed to a narrow, external event.

Secondly, they begin to internalise credit by focusing on delivering excellent work – irrespective of whether other people recognise or praise them for it.

The third step is the appearance of silent tests, and in my opinion this is arguably the most subtle potential stumbling block of them all.

Silent tests are events that arise on a professional journey that seem damaging or detrimental to the progress or trajectory made towards promotion.

It comes in the form of a major setback such as a missed promotion, a change of supervisors, a disciplinary issue or a sour personal interaction with a colleague or leader, and many more.

Silent tests have the deceitful ability to tempt you to abandon all efforts and progress and settle with the norm.

When they occur, silent tests are not enjoyable or pleasant, and they make it seem as if your journey has come to an end.

However, it is incumbent upon you to look through the test and keep your perspective firmly on the bigger picture and outcome.

It is important to remember that all examinations and tests exist as gatekeepers to determine if you can pass or not.

Tests are enabling opportunities to move onto the next thing, so the moment a test come across your path, see it as an early indicator that an elevation or promotion is imminent.
