IT is a shame that have to discuss this matter at all. In addition, we have to use UN and other assistance to determine the dramatically rising figure of malnourished children in our country.
It is cynical that the results of the recently presented study about the worsening situation of big numbers of children in this country are going to be discussed in a Cabinet that recently used NAD 30 million for a brand-new fleet of Mercedes Benz E-Class because many of them could – according to media-reports – not fit any more in the previously used Volvos due to obesity. The Prime Minister (it is known that he prefers Volvos) is quoted as saying that ‘it will not be easy, but together with interested parties we can try to change something’. Now, who has the most vital interest in securing that our children will survive on a healthy diet ?A society that does not feed its offspring is committing suicide as a society. To make it a bit more easy, I recommend that Cabinet immediately auctions the new Mercs and uses the money to secure subsistence-oriented agricultural projects. Furthermore, they can decide that each and every person who rightfully resides in Namibia personally owns at least one hectare of land to cultivate and to live on. Of course no one should be allowed to sell such land. The GPS-coordinates of such land should be documented in the birth certificate and all other ID-documents. The money from the auction and the NAD 50 million of taxpayers’ money that are earmarked for land ‘reform’ can then be used to provide seeds and to establish water supply structures as well as paying for the production of gardening tools and shade nets inside Namibia. With this and some training, everybody who wants, can produce food for him/herself and help other family members who for some reason don’t cultivate their own personal hectare. But how shall the poor Ministers then move from one place to the other? They can either walk or use taxis until they have lost sufficient weight to fit in the Volvos again, or they can be provided with a subscription to a gym to speed up the process of slimming down.Concerned CitizenVia e-mailNote: Name and address provided – Ed
