The Pettiness of Revenge

In official terms, petty is defined as something that is of little importance, but these days, the word has been transformed into a type of behaviour fuelled by revenge.

It is the side of you that wants to get back at someone, sometimes hilariously, but other times, it is just plain cruel, because the situation gets taken out of proportion.

Similar to dating your ex’s best friend because they dumped you, this kind of act borders on brash but can be quite creative, if you look at it closely. Either way, having your heart broken is a common thing, which is why not many people are taking it sitting down any longer.

Those who are driven by revenge believe that they are participating in some form of justice against the person who hurt them. Completely taken in a subjective manner, the root of revenge comes from anger instead of acceptance.

People exact revenge on their significant others if they have a vindictive nature, in other words, always feeling like they need to ‘get back’ at someone for what they did, especially if they have hurt you. It is more malicious than we may think.

Despite how innocent it seems, sabotaging someone’s relationships through spreading malicious rumours, planting a seed in seeing your ex fail, speaking rudely of them and even being destructive (especially to their property) are just some of the ways that bring about sabotage.

Unashamedly, people have caused chaos in their relationships and one of them shared their experiences with The Weekender. Tinashe Nyamutsamba’s devious plan was all kinds of petty. “Well, I diverted all my attention to her sister. The things I didn’t do for her, I did for her sister. I would send her sister money and even take her on trips.”

It may not always be the easiest thing to confess, but talking about the real issue behind revenge for the sake of hurting your ex will not only bring about a change in your behaviour, but you will be guaranteed to have peace of mind. After all, holding a grudge is a great burden on your shoulders.
