The title is just as ridiculous as the film as Salma Hayek, Samuel L Jackson and Ryan Reynolds reteam for ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ (2021).
Back to the car chases, explosions and slapstick action from the original film, the sequel finds Reynolds’ Michael Bryce deep in therapy after the traumatic effects of bodyguarding Jackson’s foul-mouthed assassin Darius Kincaid.
If you’re looking for a coherent plot, look elsewhere. But if you’re looking for utterly escapist, action-heavy nonsense wound around something about Interpol and making Greece great again while Antonio Banderas channels his inner Bond villain, ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ may be the ticket.
Hayek, who reprises her role as Sonia Kincaid, is particularly watchable and comes in with guns blazing. Refreshingly older than the usual action film’s leading lady and also in a sub-plot about the many ways to build a family yet less progressive in the constant quips about her age, Sonia is over the top and clearly in an f-bomb contest with her husband.
While Reynolds deftly delivers his bodyguard in recovery in deadpan lines like “No, I’m not doing guns right now” and “Do you have pepper spray? I’m on sabbatical”, Jackson cackles, shoots a bunch of people, says mother***ker and has a bunch of absurd sex scenes with his wife.
Frankly, the man seems a little over it but the film powers on, roping in Frank Grillo as a gruff Interpol agent named O’Neill who is entirely unimpressed by Europe and yearns for the thrill of Boston. Positioned as the maverick authority figure, O’Neill insists on recruiting the bad guys to catch the worst.
And that, in a nutshell, is the convoluted film.
Idiotically entertaining, if you can leave logic behind and just go along for the star-studded ride. Less so, if you take it at all seriously or have absolutely anything else to do instead.
