The rugged landscapes of Damaraland will once again provide the backdrop for one of Namibia’s most demanding endurance events on Saturday as runners gather at Brandberg Rest Camp near Uis for the fifth RMB Brandberg Backyard Ultra.
Presented in partnership with RMB Namibia, the event has grown into a highlight on the endurance sports calendar, attracting elite athletes, weekend warriors and outdoor enthusiasts from across the region.
Unlike traditional races, the Backyard Ultra has no fixed finish line. Athletes must complete a 6.706 km loop every hour, on the hour, for as long as they can. The challenge continues until only one runner remains capable of completing the loop within the allotted hour.
All eyes will once again be on André Ross, who has dominated the event since its inception. Ross has won all four previous editions and holds the course record of 22 laps, covering an astonishing 147.5 km. Having represented Namibia at the 2024 Backyard Ultra World Team Championship, he returns as the man to beat.
However, competition is expected to be fierce, with seasoned ultra-runners including Harmen Potgieter, Erich Goeieman, Buks Gouws and Johan Bronkhorst all capable of challenging for top honours.
In the women’s field, South African endurance athlete Kim Sontag will be looking to build on her impressive runner-up finish in 2025. Sontag currently holds the women’s course record of 20 laps (134.1 km) and is expected to be one of the standout competitors this weekend. She will be challenged by previous female course record holders, Danny Zimney and Kirsty Brits.
Beyond the individual competition, this year’s event carries added significance as the final qualifying race for the 2026 Backyard Ultra World Team Championship.
The last eight runners standing at Brandberg will secure places in the 15-member Namibian squad that will represent the country at the world championship later this year, adding another layer of intensity to an already demanding race.
While the runners test their physical and mental limits, spectators can enjoy a range of family-friendly activities throughout the weekend.
Children will be kept entertained with activities including treasure hunts and target shooting, while visitors can soak up the unique atmosphere that has become synonymous with the Brandberg Backyard Ultra.
Kosmos 94.1 will be there, sharing live feeds, interviews and behind-the-scenes updates and moments as the event unfolds.
The event’s commitment to conservation remains a key part of its identity. The Brandberg Backyard Ultra Conservation Auction will go live online on 20 July, giving supporters around the country the opportunity to bid on a variety of donated items.
Funds raised will support three conservation organisations making a meaningful impact in Namibia: Save the Rhino Trust Namibia (SRT), Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN) and the Pangolin Conservation & Research Foundation (PCRF).
Participants will also stand a chance to win a variety of lucky draw prizes, including Altra running shoes sponsored by Cycletec, as well as vouchers from OTB Sport, Spur and several other event partners.
The organisers have thanked RMB Namibia, the event’s presenting partner, along with the many sponsors and supporters who continue to make the event possible.
“Events like the Brandberg Backyard Ultra are about more than endurance sport,” the organising team said. “They bring people together, support important conservation initiatives and showcase the incredible outdoor environments Namibia has to offer.”
Whether you’re supporting a runner, spending time with family, contributing to conservation efforts or simply looking for a memorable weekend outdoors, Brandberg Rest Camp promises an unforgettable experience.
