The Bachelorette’s Shopping List

As women we’re genetically inclined to walk innocently into shopping centres before waking up at home five hours later, surrounded by shopping bags full of clothes, perfume and baked goods with no recollection of having maxed out our credit cards.

This is why the first thing a bachelorette needs to know about bachelorette shopping lists is that she has to have one.

Practical and penny saving, shopping lists are also a great way to plan healthy meals for the week so you don’t descend into a mire of takeaways and white wine when ‘cooking’ for one. Here are some bachelorette essentials when living alone and keen to stay fresh and fabulous.

What bachelorette doesn’t know breasts are a boon to all and sundry? In the kitchen, they’re even better. Prepare them skinless, lean and in a little soy or Ina Parmaan’s cook-in sauce if you want to impress someone sexy. Trash the evidence and serve them with a simple Greek salad and a little avocado for culinary kudos.

Eggs are the ultimate single girl food. Served scrambled for breakfast and with a little spinach and feta for a dinner, eggs are a great way to pack in some protein post work-out while spinach is nutrient rich as well as an explosive constipation blaster. Um…wording.

No bachelorette basket is complete without feta cheese. Lower in fat and calories than most cheeses and rich in full-bodied flavour, feta can be used sparingly but adds tons of taste to salads, soups and a bowl of diced watermelon. You heard me right.

Higher in fibre than white rice and purported to protect against colon and breast cancer, brown rice is a great side for your protein of choice. Brown rice is an example of a ‘good carb’ and is both filling and nutritious while also promoting bone health. If you feel like changing it up, whole-wheat wraps are great for stuffing with chicken and vegetables for dinner but, alas, they aren’t as healthy as a slice of whole wheat bread.

Energising, sweet and relatively low in calories, bananas are that bachelorette’s sweet tooth busting super food that won’t wreak havoc on your diet. Add this to your basket for a fibrous portable snack rich in Vitamin C.

A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. Especially if it’s honey. Honey is an essential item on every bachelorette’s shopping list because not only does it aid in fighting bacterial infections but starting your day with a glass of hot water with honey and lemon also helps to kick start your digestive system and clear your skin.

Hear this! Your love for chocolate is actually a good thing. If it’s dark. Toss a couple of bars of good dark chocolate, 70 to 85% cocoa, into your trolley and chow down on a dessert rich in antioxidants and which also helps lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Ladies, ladies, please. This doesn’t mean you need to bring it home in buckets. Dark chocolate is still calorific and very moreish so limit yourself to – slowly – sucking on a few squares after dinner.

Sober bachelorette strikes as a bit of an oxymoron and an inevitable item on our grocery lists is…wine. To get your life back on track, limit yourself to one glass a day and make it red to help lower your cholesterol, control blood sugar and protect your heart.

Because every bachelorette needs a healthy heart to help her love the one person who will make her feel brilliant, beautiful and able to conquer the world.

And by person, I mean wine.

Because wine does that.
