Telecom Namibia and TN Mobile yesterday announced an exclusive sponsorship for the ‘Dream Fight’ boxing tournament to be staged at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Katutura next Saturday, 28 September.
The tournament will feature eight professional fights, with Harry Simon taking on Geard Ajetovic of Serbia for the vacant IBF international light heavyweight title in the main bout.
At a press conference in Windhoek yesterday, the managing director of Telecom Namibia Frans Ndoroma said they believed that Namibia’s former double world champion could regain his former glory, and would assist him along the way.
“Telecom Namibia and TN Mobile are glad to be part of the process to restore him to his former glory,” he said.
“To us, boxing is an outstanding sporting code to be involved in. It is always pointed out in relationships that you give as good as you get. Throughout the many years of involvement with boxing, Telecom Namibia was able to nurture boxing talent, thereby producing world class boxers in the process. I therefore would like to express our gratitude to the boxers who have been the cornerstone of this relationship, because their dedication and hard work has made us proud as a Telecom Namibia brand and put our country on the global boxing map,” he added.
Telecom Namibia spokesman Oiva Angula could, however, not say what the sponsorship amounted to.
“We still need to sign the contract, so I can’t answer that now. We will meet with the promoters and the Namibia Boxing Control Board to iron out the issues and to ensure that the boxers get their fair share of the cake,” he said.
The ‘Dream Fight’ will be promoted by Harry Simon Onkugo Promotions, whose spokesperson Anita Tjombe said that the fight will be a stepping stone towards the IBF world title.
“This will be Harry’s first title fight since his accident and we are building his way up to another world title fight. Harry will definitely win this fight and we aim to defend it before he goes for the world title,” she said.
In the main supporting bout, Gotlieb Ndokosho will defend his IBF Continental Africa featherweight title against Feliciano Dario Azuaga of Paraguay who has a record of 84 wins, 22 losses and two draws.
In a welterweight fight, Pohamba Hamunyela will take on Phillip Ndou of South Africa, a former WBU super featherweight champion, who was stopped in seven rounds by Floyd Mayweather in 2003.
In other fights, Paulus Kapia will fight Lucas Mukete in a junior welterweight fight, Phillip Swartbooi will fight Sam Kambonde in a lightweight fight, George Iita will fight Mathew Kandala in a featherweight fight, Daniel Kashela will fight Varde Nyambekwa in a welterweight fight, and Johannes Kutumba will take on Costa Niilo in a featherweight fight.
Tickets will cost N$1 000 for ringside seats of which there are only 100 tickets available; N$500 for VIP tickets, of which there are 300 available; and N$150 for normal seats.
