Telecom aware of 626.3 GB breach of customers’ data

Telecom Namibia chief executive Stanley Shanapinda says the company is aware of the leak of its customers’ data and is assessing the extent of the breach.

This comes after Hunters International Ransomware Group claims to have breached the telecommunications operator’s data.

The group reportedly gave the company until Friday to pay a ransom or risk the leak of 626.3 GB of data, comprising 492 633 files it claims to have extracted.

“Telecom Namibia is aware of the cyber incident involving the customer data leak. Since then, we have been assessing the full scope and extent of the incident with our local and international cybersecurity experts,” he said in a statement posted on X on Saturday.

Shanapinda said although widely expressed concerns are valid, Telecom Namibia is addressing the matter and will issue a detailed statement as soon as possible to respond to questions, concerns, comments and media reports.

“We appreciate your concerns and plead for your patience and possible understanding as we work hard to resolve this matter. We assure you that the security of our customers’ information remains our priority,” Shanapinda said.
