THE first group of Team Namibia’s athletes and officials left for India yesterday to participate in the Commonwealth Games which begin this Sunday.
The sports codes which left for the Indian capital city, New Delhi, are athletics and bowling.The remaining group – comprising of boxers, shootists, gymnasts and archers – will leave on Tuesday.Meanwhile, Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) Secretary-General Abner Xoagub informed Nampa yesterday that the Commonwealth Games would proceed as planned.He said all 71 participating countries have confirmed that they would be taking part in the Games, whose preparations have been a spot of bother over the past few days.Speaking about the collapse of a footbridge at the Games’ main stadium last week, Xoagub said everything is now in place, and there will be no cancellation of the Games.The ceiling and footbridge at the main venue collapsed, injuring 27 workers.According to Xoagub, the Commonwealth Secretariat is fully behind the Games’ Local Organizing Committee’s decision to go ahead with the Games.Namibia will have a total of 30 athletes and 15 officials at the sports competition of former British colonies.
