Symlafa 2022: Celebrities, Red Carpet and More

Some stars donned bizarre garments and accessories to the much-anticipated Simply You Magazine Lifestyle and Fashion Awards (Symlafas) over the past weekend, which saw fashion gurus and first-time nominees walk away with accolades.

With so many events happening around town lately, perhaps the time to be creative was not there?

In any case, the theme was simple, ‘Avant-Garde’, which means “new and experimental ideas and methods”, but many missed the memo, including some of our more influential fashion icons who rocked up dressed like they were attending their matric farewell.

The mere fact that we cannot stick to themes is really unfortunate, it shows that we don’t follow instructions but more so, it dampens the efforts of event organisers, who actually go above and beyond to teach us nice things.

Koliks, let’s learn to follow!

The fifth edition of the Symlafas took place the National Theatre of Namibia, starting with a red carpet which had many wondering what the actual theme of the event was.

Although some decided to wear their day-to-day outfits to this glamorous event, there were those who definitely went the extra mile to meet event organisers halfway.

E for effort.

Early arrivals included the likes of former Miss Namibia Chelsi Shikongo and recently crowned Miss Namibia 2022 Cassia Sharpley, who both opted for dark gowns that didn’t speak to the ‘Avant Garde’ theme, more like they were attending ‘My Perfect Wedding’.

Actress and influencer Cassije Jessica made an entrance in her Oshiwambo traditional outfit, which she often wears while in character for her comedy series ‘Mee Gwashiimi’. Perhaps she was trying out another marketing strategy?

TV personality Robyn Nakaambo was the true definition of ‘understanding the assignment’: she wore an elegantly designed ‘Take Two Card Game’ dress made by Fyn China Creations, which complemented the theme of the night.

With her motto being ‘create your own style’, stylist Martina Pieper surely followed her own stylishness when she showed up speaking to the theme.

Among the fails were some fashion hits and memorable moments, such as astonishing performances by various artists like Otjiwarongo R&B artist Yeezir. He graced the stage with electrifying stage presence while performing his latest hit, ‘Pretty Vibe’ and had the crowd on their toes dancing to his tunes.

Meanwhile, songstress Tequila, who went MIA from the music scene for some time, surprised attendees with a brilliant performance alongside kwaito star Sunny Boy.

Having seen Maria Nepembe thrive in film and modelling already, perhaps it’s time for her to widen her horizons once again, just not hosting entertainment events of this calibre.

In this regard, we call on the vars vleis (who won’t be hosting award shows as if it were the 20h00 news on ‘its ours’) to please be given the equal opportunities, as our veterans were provided many moons ago, to ensure a sustainable industry instead of having to relay on the same individuals every time.
