Suzuki Swift gets brighter for 2014

Launched in 2011, Suzuki’s popular Swift hatchback has undergone a number of changes and updates for the 2014 model year.

Most of the improvements are focused on fresher aesthetics, but some of the standard specifications have also been enhanced. The 2014 Swift benefits from a smarter interior execution, with Bluetooth connectivity now added to the GLS model’s list of standard features.

The system not only allows pairing with compatible devices such as mobile phones for wireless telephony, but also facilitates audio streaming from smartphones and Bluetooth-enabled audio devices. Another welcome addition is cruise control, which has also been added to GLS models, and can be conveniently operated using switchgear located on the steering wheel.

The seats of both GL and GLS versions of the updated Swift benefit from a new, more contemporary fabric, adding to the hatchback’s modern appeal. Perhaps the most eye-catching update is the 2014 Swift’s redesigned grille, accompanied by a new bumper. GLS models benefit from the fitment of LED daytime running lights as standard, while there is a new cooling aperture sur-

round for the GL derivative. At the rear, the high-mounted third brake light is now a brighter LED unit.

In addition, the full wheel caps of the GL model have been redesigned, while the GLS sports a brand new alloy wheel design. A new exterior colour, dubbed Luminous Blue Metallic, has also been introduced to the updated Swift model range. The 2014 Swift range retains Suzuki’s efficient, fuel-injected four-cylinder engine. The K14B unit has a rated maximum power output of 70 kW at 6 000 r/min, coupled to a 130 Nm torque peak at 4 000 r/min. Fuel economy is a stand-out attribute across the Swift range, with the five speed manual gearbox-equipped models achieving a combined-cycle consumption figure of just 5,5 litres/100 km, linked to CO2 emissions of 132 g/km.

The GLS Automatic, with its smooth-shifting four-speed auto transmission, posts a combined-cycle figure of 6,2 litres/100 km, with a commensurate CO2 emissions rating of 147 g/km. The 2014 Suzuki Swift is available in two specification grades. The Swift GL matches affordability to well above-average levels of standard features. It boasts power steering with height-adjustable steering wheel, electric windows front and rear, remote-controlled central locking for the doors and tailgate, and air-conditioning. Also on the list are electrically adjustable mirrors, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, and a multi-function trip computer that displays outside temperature, fuel consumption and driving range.

The rear seat offers 60/40-split folding capability, with a handy convenience hook on the rear passenger seat backs for securing shopping bags. Safety standards are high, with the GL feature dual front airbags, as well as ABS anti-lock brakes. The Swift GLS offers an even more up-market and sophisticated execution, and the choice of a manual or automatic gearbox. Visually, the main distinguishing features are the new 16-inch alloy wheels and the front fog lights, now framed by LED daytime running lights.

Inside, the GLS now adds Bluetooth and cruise control to the already extensive specification list. The leather-trimmed steering wheel is adjustable for reach and height, and is equipped with switchgear for the sound system, and now also for the newly added cruise control.

Safety standards are further enhanced by the standard fitment of dual front, side and curtain airbags. Additional features include automatic climate control, and a USB socket for playing music from flash drives or portable media devices. A key-less operation system that allows keyless starting and stopping, as well as unlocking and locking of the doors, is also included. The lively Swift Sport remains largely unchanged, retaining all the exterior and interior features unique to this performance model.

However, it does gain the cruise control and Bluetooth functionality introduced to mainstream Swift models, while the relevant

switchgear has been added to the Sport’s steering wheel, too. As the athlete of the Swift range, the Sport employs a free-revving 1,6-litre fuel-injected engine producing a lively 100 kW of maximum output at 6 900 r/min, linked to a torque peak of 160 Nm at 4 400 r/min.

The Sport’s standard electronic stability control (ESC) optimises traction and safety, but can be switched off for those seeking an

even racier driving experience. The purchase price includes metallic paint, as well as the Suzuki Complete programme, which covers the full spectrum of after-sales support. The Suzuki Swift is covered by a comprehensive three-year/100 000 km warranty, supported by six-year corrosion cover. A three-year/ 60 000 km service plan is standard, as is a three-year AA roadside assistance plan.
