Spelling: The Silent Stumbling Block

In Numerous Schools, particularly in rural areas and overcrowded urban institutions, there has been a significant rise in the number of pupils failing, with some repeating the same grade for two to three years.

This situation often does not stem from a lack of intelligence or commitment. Rather, many pupils struggle with spelling certain words – if not most.

Their failures are therefore not due to a lack of seriousness about their studies, but rather a persistent difficulty with spelling.

Regardless of how much they study or pay attention in class, this challenge cannot be easily resolved.

It is essential for educators to take an active role in identifying these pupils and providing targeted support.

This could mean offering extra lessons and teaching the basics of spelling, regardless of a pupil’s grade level.

Such intervention would be invaluable.

Without this, we end up with situations where, for example, a Grade 10 pupil struggles to spell simple words.

How then can that pupil be expected to succeed in their subjects? Spelling must be regarded with seriousness.

It is not enough to simply instruct pupils to practise independently – it requires dedicated attention.

Education stakeholders should unite, pool resources, and ensure that Namibian children are given the opportunity to thrive instead of being neglected.

Educators, in particular, must focus on supporting struggling pupils rather than consistently prioritising those who are already excelling.

In summary, all children have the potential to learn and achieve excellent results if provided with a supportive learning environment.

Parents, too, should allocate extra time for practice without overwhelming pupils or resorting to negative language when they struggle academically.

Instead of criticism, children require personalised support and encouragement, as condemnation only worsens the situation.

By working together, we can assist Namibian pupils in achieving success and reaching their full potential.
