Southern stream AGM deferred over finances

Over 80% of Southern Stream First Division (SSFD) clubs are financially not in good standing with the football body, says its chairperson, Murs Markus.

He says the SSFD executive held a meeting last week to look into the constitutional compliance with regard to calling an annual general meeting (AGM).

“The executive decided that for the clubs to participate in the AGM, they need to be in good standing, but that was not the case as more than 80% of the clubs are not in good standing,” Markus said on Desert FM this week.

“You cannot go to an annual general meeting and make decisions, which will be binding, if your members do not or are not in good standing,” he said.

Markus, who doubles as Namibia Football Association (NFA) vice president, said part of the problem is caused by most of the lower division clubs being reliant on the NFA for funding.

“One of the items on the agenda is obviously the budget for the upcoming football season,” he said.

“However, at this point in time, we have not received fund allocations yet from the NFA to put us in a position where we can now align our budget and for the clubs to make the necessary arrangements with regard to their financial commitments,” Markus added.

He said they had resolved that the AGM be deferred to 8 February, with the league kickoff on 15 February.

As for the funds allocation from the NFA, Markus said it will be attended to by the end of the week.

“Yes, we were told that we will get the funds on Friday (31 January). However, if the clubs fail to submit their financial report, the matter will be taken back to the executive for a decision to be made,” Markus explained.

He added that despite the shortcoming, the draft fixtures for the upcoming 2024/25 football season are concluded and communicated to the clubs for their contribution.

The new SSFD season will feature the much anticipated revival of the Katutura Derby between archrivals Black Africa and Orlando Pirates, with the once heralded clubs relegated from the country’s top tier league.

Other teams expected to compete in the SSFD are: Eleven Arrows FC, Mariental port Club FC, Dates Eleven FC, O&L Ramblers FC, Orangemund FC, Try Again FC and Latino FC.
