The establishment of a regional electricity distributor for southern Namibia is still underway more than 10 years after the idea was hatched.
Electricity Control Board (ECB) chief executive Robert Kahimise says a shareholders’ agreement that needed signing is currently with the Office of the Attorney General awaiting approval.
“As soon as it is approved, there will be some direction and progress on the operationalisation,” he says.
Kahimise says the south is the only part of the country that does not have its own regional electricity distributor.
This makes operations difficult for the village councils providing electricity in the area.
The establishment of a southern regional electricity distributor came about at an electricity distribution industry summit in 2014.
This was after the exit of Southern Electrical Company (Selco).
