Southern dams rise to 90% after rains

Major dams in southern Namibia have received substantial inflows of water during the past week after rainfall in their catchment areas.

Inflows since the start of last week have resulted in the combined level of dams in southern Namibia rising to 90.8% of their storage capacity by yesterday, the Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) announced in its weekly update on the state of the country’s dams.

The southern dams had a combined level of 88.7% at the start of last week, and 94% a year ago.

Hardap Dam near Mariental received an inflow of 13.7 million cubic metres of water since the start of last week, while an inflow of 8.9 million cubic metres was recorded at Naute Dam near Keetmanshoop, and Neckartal Dam received an inflow of four million cubic metres, NamWater reported in its weekly dam bulletin.

Other dams that received inflows during the past week include the Swakoppoort (1.3 million cubic metres), Von Bach (548 000 cubic metres) and Oanob (433 000 cubic metres) dams.

The combined level of the Swakoppoort, Von Bach and Omatako dams, from which water for the Windhoek area is sourced, stood at 58.2% of their storage capacity yesterday, compared to a combined level of 88.4% a year ago and 57.6% a week ago.

The three dams were storing 89.9 million cubic metres of water yesterday. At the same point last year, the three dams held 136.6 million cubic metres of water.

The main dam levels reported by NamWater yesterday, with the dams’ readings at the corresponding time a year ago in brackets, are:

Dreihuk 15.7% (38.3%)
Bondels 7.5% (89.7%)
Oanob 60.5% (78.1%)
Swakoppoort 82.9% (100%)
Von Bach 70.8% (79.8%)
Omatako 8.5% (81%)
Otjivero Main 31.5% (24.5%)
Otjivero Silt 2.2% (75%)
Tilda Viljoen 52.6% (18.2%)
Daan Viljoen 57.2% (64%)
Olushandja 55.9% (77.2%)
Friedenau 54.3% (66%).
