Smit wins big at Wanderers awards

JJ Smit was the big winner at Wanderers Cricket Club’s annual prize giving ceremony over the weekend, winning three major awards.

The 25-year-old all-rounder won the Sportsman of the Year award, as well as the Players’ Player of the Year award after being nominated by his team mates.

He also won the Best Batsman award in the Premier League, after scoring 320 runs at an average of 45,71, with a highest score of 87 runs against Welwitschia.

Bernard Scholtz won the Premier League Best Bowler award after taking 31 wickets for 297 runs at an average of 9,58, with a best performance of five wickets for nine runs against Welwitschia.

Karl Birkenstock won the Premier League Best All Rounder award after taking 30 wickets and scoring 237 runs, while Jan Frylinck won the Best Fielder award.

PD Blignaut won the Up-and-coming Junior award; JC Balt won the Best Junior award; and Hansie de Villiers won the Most Improved Player award.

Wessel Myburgh won the First Division Best Batsman award after scoring 984 runs at an average of 75,69 with a top score of 128 not out against the Zebras.

Steven Delport won the First Division Best Bowler award, taking 21 wickets for 345 runs, at an average of 16,43 and a best performance of four wickets for nine runs against United II.

JC Balt won the First Division Best All Rounder award after scoring 380 runs and taking nine wickets.

Oliven Glen-Spyron won the Fielding Excellence Award, Tommie van der Merwe won the award for the Second Division Best Fielder, and Andre Smith won the Most Loyal Supporter award.

Stefan Short won the Most Dedicated Player award, Charne Louw won the Scorer of the Year award, and Annemarie de Villiers won the Chairman’s Award.

There were also some únwanted’ awards, with Niko Davin winning the Most Ducks award, and Stephan Jordaan winning the award for the most wides per over.
