THE School Environment Clubs (SEC) Namibia, in collaboration with the Namdeb Diamond Corporation, Namibia Chamber of Environment, and education ministry, hosted the Primary Schools Quiz 2025 on 20 September.
The quiz brought together 14 Khomas schools under the theme ‘Protecting What Sustains Us: Food, Water, Environment, Energy and Life’.
The competition aimed to enhance environmental literacy, empower pupils with knowledge to safeguard Namibia’s natural resources, as well as to raise environmental awareness, SEC says.
The winning schools include Suiderhof Primary School, People’s Primary School, Tobias Hainyeko Primary School, Delta School Windhoek, Pionierspark Primary School, Môresen Special School and Dagbreek Resource School.
Suiderhof pupil Aria Keya (12) says during the quiz she learned what plankton was.
“At first when the judges asked the question my mind was blank, but after thinking, I said a bunch of random words and the answer was right! The answer I gave: plankton is a microorganism that mainly lives in water,” she says.
Keya says competitions like this are important because they not only educate Namibians about the environment, but are also “incredibly fun”.
“The best part of the quiz was probably getting a cute plant at the end,” she says.
SEC founder and country director Inomuinjo Kapimbi says the quiz was a reminder of how deeply our lives are connected to the environment around us.
“Pupils could see that issues like water, food, energy and biodiversity are not abstract topics from textbooks, but the very foundation of their future,” he says.
He adds that the quiz encouraged pupils to think about how their choices affect the planet.
“When young people are given the chance to learn, question and express themselves, they become powerful voices for change. The quiz planted seeds of awareness, and these are the seeds that will grow into leaders who protect and sustain our world,” he says.
