‘Scary Movie’ 6 is coming

NOSTALGIA … With ‘Scary Movie 6’ set to release soon, Marlon and Keenan Wayans have a special message for audiences in Kaaps slang.

Millennials are losing their minds over the franchise’s return

Millenials, this is your official “we’ve been here since the beginning” moment.

The sixth instalment of ‘Scary Movie’ is on the way, and suddenly the timeline is flooded with nostalgia like it’s the early 2000s again and we’re still quoting lines in the lounge like it’s a personality trait.

Because we didn’t just watch ‘Scary Movie’, we lived through it. From the first film, the Wayans brothers basically raised a generation on parody comedy.

They took every major film moment and said: “Relax, we’re going to laugh at it instead.” And we did. Repeatedly. Sometimes before we even understood the joke fully.

It was the golden era of ridiculous humour, where being scared in movies came with a side of slapstick and absolutely no emotional recovery time. You’d be screaming one second and laughing the next, then quoting it for the next 10 years like it was scripture.

Now the franchise is back, and the internet is doing what it does best: losing its mind in the group chats. But things have taken a very Mzansi turn too.

Film producer Romantha Botha shared a clip of Marlon and Shawn Wayans attempting Kaaps during an interview, explaining what it means to local audiences and providing context for the phrase being shared online.

In the clip, they try their hand at “stiek uit jou bang ding”, and also land on variations like “stiek uit”.

As Botha put it, it was a chance to introduce them to Kaaps and see how they handled it.

We’ve all been there, watching someone try our slang with full confidence while we sit there thinking “close, but not quite”.

Still, it’s a full-circle moment. A franchise we grew up on, now speaking (attempting) our language, meeting our humour halfway, and reminding us why parody comedy will always hit when it’s done right.

For longtime fans, it’s less about reinvention and more about reunion, stepping back into a world where nothing is serious, everything is exaggerated and laughter does all the heavy lifting.

The franchise returns with the same chaotic parody energy that made it a staple for an entire generation.

The sixth instalment of ‘Scary Movie’ will be in theatres from Friday. – IOL Entertainment
