The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development has warned the Rundu Town Council to strictly follow the law when allocating land, saying all allocations require ministerial approval and must comply with prescribed legal procedures.
Addressing the council during a meeting at Rundu on Monday, line minister James Sankwasa said adherence to the law is critical to ensure transparency, fairness and accountability in land administration.
He also raised concern over cases of double land allocations, urging the council to verify all relevant documentation and establish the facts before allocating plots to prevent similar incidents.
Sankwasa called on the council to intensify efforts to keep the town clean by involving unemployed residents in community clean-up programmes.
“Such initiatives would improve the town’s environment while creating temporary employment opportunities for local residents,” he said.
The minister reminded the council to ensure its audit records are up to date, warning that failure to comply with audit requirements could have serious consequences.
He cautioned that he would not approve the council’s budget if outstanding audits are not finalised, stressing that sound financial management remains a key requirement for local authorities.
