Almost 11 000 members of the San community have been registered to acquire national documents in a period of 24 days.
The Office of the President’s Division of Marginalised Communities and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Social Welfare registered 10 932 San individuals as part of an outreach programme by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security.
The programme aims to provide national documents and access to social protection services to members of the San community. It commenced on 23 June, and aims to reach at least 16 000 members of the San community in 63 constituencies.
The programme will run until 30 August and cover the Oshikoto, Omusati, Oshana, Otjozondjupa, Hardap, Omaheke, Ohangwena, Kavango West, Kavango East, and Kunene regions.
A considerable number of San individuals reside in remote areas and face barriers in accessing government services. The outreach programme offers crucial services for free, including the registration of births and identity documents (IDs), replacement of lost or damaged national documents, amendments to personal particulars, and distribution of uncollected IDs.
Additionally, the Marginalised Communities Division and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Social Welfare are facilitating applications for various social protection services.
The ministry urges members of the public, traditional authorities, regional and local leaders, and civil society organisations to assist in informing and mobilising San families who have limited access to radio, mobile networks, and other media. This grassroots effort is vital to ensuring that all eligible members can access essential services and secure their legal identity and documents, aligning with the government’s commitment to inclusive development and “leaving no one behind”.
