Roads fund supports safety campaign

Shikongo made this comment in reaction to a donation worth N$15 million that the Road Fund Administration has made, in the form of vehicles, equipment, training of traffic officers and conducting of traffic operations, to road safety in Namibia

“These types of support from stakeholders are indeed very necessary if we are to make an impact in enhancing road safety on our public roads, and should be commended and encouraged by all of us,” Shikongo said.

He was speaking in Windhoek during the official launch of a festive season road safety campaign.

Shikongo said the police will ensure that traffic laws and regulations are enforced.

“Our fixed road traffic checkpoints and mobile checkpoints, particularly on the

B1 and B2 main roads as well as other secondary roads, will operate 24 hours around the clock, seven days a week, and our traffic officers and their equipment will be constantly visible on the national roads,” he said.

Shikongo said the importance of a message on road safety cannot be over-emphasised.

“All road users are compelled to adhere to the traffic laws and regulations at all times, not only when they see a traffic checkpoint or traffic patrol vehicles on the highway, but it should become a norm and standard to comply,” he said

“Public members must continue to enhance self-policing and not just wait for law enforcement interventions.”

Shikongo urged all road users to be vigilant and committed to the motto “do the right thing and save lives”.
