I WOULD like to bring to the attention of local schools, their principals and staff, what appears to be a total lack of understanding of safety when crossing over a road.
Are the children not taught: look right, look left, look right again, if all clear, and then walk? On my way to work I encounter children so engrossed in conversation and stepping off the pavement onto busy roads. Another safety point is that speed humps with a chevron strips on are obviously thought to be pedestrian zebra crossings and I have had experiences of children sauntering across these humps with such an attitude like they have right of way, and only last week I saw a guy shout at a child walking over a speed hump, without waiting for the vehicle to stop before stepping off the pavement.A zebra crossing has recently been installed near a school with a robot that can be manually operated by pressing a button to switch the robot to red.I have been held up here admittedly after school hours by children activating the switch then walking in a small group to the other side of the road, and again pressing the button, a game for them maybe, but roads are not a place to play games. Please teachers, spend just a little time to instil road safety into your pupils each month and you could be saving lives.Denis Hill SwakopmundAnother safety point is that speed humps with a chevron strips on are obviously thought to be pedestrian zebra crossings and I have had experiences of children sauntering across these humps with such an attitude like they have right of way, and only last week I saw a guy shout at a child walking over a speed hump, without waiting for the vehicle to stop before stepping off the pavement.A zebra crossing has recently been installed near a school with a robot that can be manually operated by pressing a button to switch the robot to red.I have been held up here admittedly after school hours by children activating the switch then walking in a small group to the other side of the road, and again pressing the button, a game for them maybe, but roads are not a place to play games. Please teachers, spend just a little time to instil road safety into your pupils each month and you could be saving lives.Denis Hill Swakopmund
