Revealing Your Sexual History to Your Ex

Discovering you have a sexual transmitted infection can be a difficult process. You have to go for numerous treatments and it’s not exactly the easiest thing to tell your close friends.

However, if you have contracted the infection and your ex doesn’t have a clue about your sexual history, are you obligated to confess your secret to them? Would you let them know that they have to go for testing immediately, for their safety, before they spread the infection to someone else? Or would you keep it to yourself and rather let things play out?

asked its readers their opinions and this is what they had to say:

“No,” Promise Itumba answered. “It’s not about being stubborn, but about shame. It’s really shameful! A person who really cares about his/her body must get tested without being told. Though you are a part of my history, I will not deal with your life!”

Andrew Shatimwene felt obligated to tell his ex. “Yes, I will. Don’t be selfish. Prevention is better than cure. Remember that love is a cycle, you may end up doing it with your ex side chick.”

For Ester Kashy Namoongo, one of the biggest steps was to confess. “Tell your ex,” she said. “Don’t be selfish. Karma will catch up with you if you don’t.”

Kamwi Nalisa had something else in mind. “It depends on the sexually transmitted disease and how we broke up.” Otherwise, it’s simply on a need-to-know basis!

Meanwhile, Gideon Ndara believed it was a necessity. “As soon as I find out I am infected with an STI, I have to think of getting treated. But getting treated alone would mean risking her life and that of people she will get involved with. So I will take the initial step of informing her so that she goes for the same treatment.”

Laurencia Garises agreed. “Yes, I will,” she said.

Overall, the readers feel that confessing to your ex would be the right thing to do and doctors encourage this as well.
