The New Project School, which is currently undergoing final construction work at Rehoboth’s Block G Extension 3, will officially open its doors on 1 February.
Acting school principal Charmaine Steyn says the school will accommodate about 350 pupils from Grade R to 3 in both English and Afrikaans sections.
Steyn says pupils and staff were already due to have started with lessons at the school, but for now, classes are being held at Rehoboth Primary School.
“The toilets and yard fence are not complete yet. Staff are currently on the premises working hard to ensure things get done as soon as possible. We are, however, looking forward to having the pupils and staff at the school very soon.”
Steyn says the school’s name – New Project School – is temporary.
“For now, we don’t have a permanent name for the school just yet. The name will be discussed during the second parent’s meeting later this month. We had our first parent’s meeting already on 16 January.
The school was built by the education ministry to help address a shortage of school space at Rehoboth, says Steyn.
She notes that many children struggle to secure space at schools due to overcrowding.
“School [space] shortages are a nationwide problem and, therefore, we are thankful for the new school at Rehoboth. Each child has the right to be in school. With the construction of the new school, more children will be able to go to school.”
Steyn says it is sad that some children were not able to secure space at schools.
“In these cases, most parents at Rehoboth often keep them home. It is not right for a child to stay at home because every child deserves education. Schools must continue to be built because the population keeps growing.
“The new school has surely made many people at the town happy and filled them with new hope,” Steyn adds.
