Records tumble at National Swimming Champs

The Bank Windhoek National Swimming Championships which took place at the Olympia Municipal Pool over the weekend saw some great performances with a total of 10 national and five NASU records established.

The 12-year-old Corne le Roux from Dolphins broke three age group records as well as a relay record.

In the 11-12 year category he broke the 50m butterfly record with a time of 32,13 seconds and the 100m butterfly record with a time of 1:10,03, while he took more than three seconds off the 200m butterfly record with a new time of 2:37,99.

Le Roux also formed part of the Dolphins 11-12 200m relay team, along with Johann Serfontein, Martin Oosthuizen and Marlon Reinhardt, that set a new 200m Medley Relay record of 2:27,77.

Heleni Stergiadis of Dolphins broke her own 12 and Under 400m freestyle record with a time of 5:02,52, while Mikah Burger of Dolphins broke the Men’s 9-10 100m freestyle record with a time of 1:11,29.

Alexander Skinner of Dolphins set a new Men’s 15-16 50m freestyle record of 24,75 seconds, to break Nicolai Flemming’s previous record of 24,82 seconds.

The NSA Women’s Open Medley Relay team established two new Open records.

Zanre Oberholzer, Daniele Lindemeier, Sonja Adelaar and Zune Weber teamed up to set a new 200m Medley record of 2:04,87, while Oberholzer, Lindemeier, Adelaar and Kiara Schatz set a new 400m Medley record of 4:31,69.

The NSA Men’s 13-14 team of Heinrich Burger, Ronan Wantenaar, Jureck Johannesson and Fiano Feris set a new 200m Medley Relay record of 2:11,60.

A further five NASU records for non-Namibians were also established.

The 22-year-old Nico Meyer from the South African Tuks Swimming Club established three Men’s Open NASU records.

In the butterfly event he set a 50m record of 25,29 and a 100m record of 54,90, while he also set a 100m freestyle record of 52,27.

Bernard van der Walt of Dolphins set a new NASU Men 9-10 50m backstroke record of 37,58.

The Dolphins Men’s 9-10 relay team of Bernard van der Walt, Christopher de Jager, Enrik von Alvensleben and Mikah Burger improved the NASU 200m freestyle relay record by more than four seconds with a new time of 2:16,92.

Zanre Oberholzer of NSA won the Senior Victrix Ludorum trophy with 3 729 points, just beating team mate Sonja Adelaar (3 718 points) into second place, while Daniela Lindemeier of NSA came third with 3 654 points.

Alexander Skinner of Dolphins was the Senior Victor Ludorum with 3 414 points, although the visiting Nico Meyer of Tuks Swimming Club was the top senior male performer with 4 172 points.

Heleni Stergiadis of Dolphins won the Junior Victrix Ludorum trophy with 169 points, followed by Zune Weber of NSA (144) and Joanne Liebenberg of Dolphins (106).

Corne le Roux of Dolphins won the Junior Victor Ludorum trophy with 216 points, followed by Ricardo Richter of Dolphins (142) and Ronan Wantenaar of Dolphins (123).

Dolphins Swimming Club dominated the championships, winning nearly twice as many medals as second placed Namib Swimming Academy.

Dolphins won a total of 260 medals (86 gold, 93 silver and 81 bronze) while NSA won 132 medals (56 gold, 35 silver and 41 bronze medals).

The Tuks Swimming team from South Africa, which participated on invitation, won a total of 16 medals, as did Swakopmund Swimming Club.

Oranjemund Sand Sharks won 12 medals while Uniswim won two medals.

Nico Meyer from Tuks was the top performer according to FINA points.

He received 747 Fina points for winning the Men’s Open 100m butterfly in 54,90 seconds and 722 FINA points for his 100m freestyle time of 52,27 seconds.

Zanre Oberholzer of NSA obtained 716 Fina points for her 15-16 100m backstroke time of 1:04,95 and 701 FINA points for her 50m backstroke time of 30,46 seconds.
