AROUND 70 youth teams will battle it out for top honours this weekend as Ramblers Football Club bid to host another successful youth football tournament in Windhoek.
Apart from the Windhoek-based teams, others will come from Rosh Pinah, Rundu, Otjiwarongo, Henties Bay and Swakopmund.
The competition will cover under 7, under 9, under 11, under 13, under 15 and under 17 age groups and will be played over three days (Friday to Sunday) at the Ramblers and Unam fields.
“Ramblers is happy to welcome the teams, especially the teams from Rundu and Henties Bay who are entering for the first time. Some of their players will play on grass for the first time. For some a trip to Windhoek is like playing at the World Cup. We are honoured to play a part in their development,” Sedrick van Turah, chairperson of Ramblers Football Club, said.
While exposing the youngsters to thorough developmental competition, the tournament gives them exposure in terms of travelling to see other parts of the country.
It will be the 11th edition of the tournament, with the first one staged in July 2008.
While the Ohlthaver and List Group is the main sponsor, various other companies have come on board with Omnitel Namibia sponsoring the under 7 competition, Valco Pumps and Valves taking care of the under 9’s, Financial Consulting Services pumping money into the under 11 category and a previous parent of Ramblers academy, Martin Krafft, sponsoring the under 13’s.
The under 15 category is sponsored by Elwere CC and Mobipay will take care of the medals and trophies at under 17 level.
