Proposal for 12-storey building at Langstrand is ‘no joke’

A PROPOSAL for a 12-storey building on the beachfront at Langstrand is not a joke, according to the Walvis Bay Municipality.

On Friday, an e-mail with an attached artist’s impression of the proposed building at Langstrand, as well as an official request by the developer for possible objections against the development, was mailed to The Namibian.
Some people phoned The Namibian, asking whether the e-mail was some kind of hoax or prank.
But the developer, Gunther Heimstadt, yesterday confirmed that it is no joke.
‘The plans were approved and we will start building soon,’ Heimstadt said.
In the e-mail dated 13 April, addressed to the 22 occupants of Lelandies beachfront apartments at Langstrand, Heimstadt said: ‘I want to know if you maybe know what is coming up in front of your view to the ocean… A new building which I am going to build at the opening next to the tide pool in front of Lelandies, close to the Long Beach Restaurant.’
He warned them that the building ‘could spoil your sea view, and your whole view to Swakopmund’.
The Namibian called the Walvis Bay Municipality’s Manager for Public Relations, Kevin Adams, on Friday to find out more.
‘No. It’s no joke. There was a proposal forwarded to the municipality. I’m just not sure whether our Management Committee has considered it yet,’ Adams said.
He said he had seen the artist’s impression and admitted that ‘it would definitely stick out a little’.
