After a two-week break of no premier football action, the Namibia Premier Football League (NPFL) will resume this week with Windhoek-based FC Ongos taking on Bucks Buccaneers tomorrow.
The mouth-watering action, set for Independence Stadium, is anticipated to be intense and decisive for both sides, as the teams hope to remain in the top eight bracket of the NPFL log when the season concludes.
FC Ongos is third placed on 44 points, while Bucks Buccaneers are three places behind on 37 points.
A victory against FC Ongos will take Bucks to fifth place on 40 points, briefly overcoming coastal-side Eleven Arrows, who are currently fifth with 37 points.
Bucks increased momentum following their slow start to the season. However, FC Ongos have relied on their consistent run, edging forward and truly becoming a force to be reckoned with. They have an opportunity to cause severe damage to the two-top teams if they continue with their impressive run.
However, the real battle of the weekend is between the two sides with a rivalry that has become intense and competitive. Eeshoke Chula Chula will welcome archrival and log leaders African Stars SC at Oshakati Independence Stadium.
The match between the two teams is anticipated to keep spectators on their toes with the stadium set to be fully packed.
It will be a do-or-die encounter for both sides, with just a one-point difference separating them. Stars lead the standings on 50 points, followed closely by Chula Chula on 49.
Fourth-placed KK Palace are another title contender and will face Khoma Nampol FC on Saturday at the same venue.
KK have had a fantastic run and showed determination to remain in the elite league. A win against poor-run Khomas Nampol is not impossible.
Khomas Nampol lie 12th on the log with 28 points, and they must pull up their socks if they hope to remain in the elite domestic league. It will be a tough battle to overcome against KK as the northern outfit will have the home advantage.
A coastal-derby will feature ninth-placed Ven Blue Waters FC against old-time foe Tigers SC at Jan Wilkens Stadium.
Blue Waters have collected 35 points, while relegation-threatened Tigers, on 21 points, have endured a poor run and continue to struggle to escape the drop zone. Tigers boast a well-experienced technical bench but have shown no rhythm and flair to capture the spectators’ support.
Arrows will host another struggling side, Gobabis-based Young African, who did extremely well last season, and qualified for the Confederation of African Football (Caf) Confederation Cup qualifiers, but exited the campaign during the preliminary rounds.
The ‘Cattle Boys’ have had an unappetizing run, and are on the verge of relegation if they fail to re-energise and put purpose to their mission.
Young African FC is seated 13th on 27 points. However, with the launch of the Standard Bank Namibia Top 8 Cup, clubs are likely to reinforce their arsenal and firepower to feature in the Top 8 spectacle.
