Positive inflows boost Namibia’s dam levels

Hardap Dam, which suspended water supplies to irrigation farmers last year, recorded a significant inflow of 21.615 million cubic metres (Mm3) during the past week.

According to latest Dam Bulletin dated 10 February 2025, issued by Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) spokesperson Lot Ndamanomhata, this pushed the level of the largest dam in Namibia to 22.1%.

He said Neckartal Dam, the country’s largest dam in terms of capacity, received an inflow of 0.727 Mm3, raising it to 79.8%.

“NamWater is pleased to report positive inflows into several of Namibia’s dams. These inflows come as a welcome relief, contributing to improved water security for various regions across the country,” he said.

According to the bulletin, significant inflows were recorded in the Swakoppoort, Von Bach, Omatako, Friedenau, Otjivero Silt, Hardap, Neckartal, Naute and Oanob dams, marking a positive trend in the country’s water storage levels.

Among the notable increases were Swakoppoort Dam which received an inflow of 1.955 Mm3, bringing its storage level to 27.4% of full capacity.

The Von Bach Dam recorded an increase of 0.840 Mm3 and now stands at 26.3%, while Omatako Dam gained 0.392 Mm3, raising its level to 5.3%.

NamWater said Friedenau Dam saw an inflow of 0.043 Mm3 and now has 46.8% capacity, while Otjivero Silt Dam received 0.079 Mm3, boosting its level to 2.7%.

Naute Dam experienced an inflow of 4.093 Mm3, increasing its level to 31.9% and Oanob Dam recorded an inflow of 0.177 Mm3, bringing it to 33.4%.

“These inflows are encouraging, particularly for the central area of Namibia, where water supply security remains a priority,” said Ndamanomhata.

He further said transfers from Swakoppoort to Von Bach Dam, which commenced on 9 February 2025, are expected to further support supply needs in Windhoek and surrounding areas.

“NamWater urges the public to maintain responsible water consumption despite the positive developments,” he appealed.
