The police in the Erongo region have launched a search for a man who disappeared in the sea while swimming at a beach near Platz am Meer Mall at Swakopmund.
The incident happened on Thursday.
Erongo police spokesperson senior inspector Hilma Shomongula says one blue sandal and a navy blue jacket were recovered at the scene.
The identity of the man remains unknown, she says.
Shomongula says the man was seen swimming alone before he got into trouble in the water.
“It is alleged that a young black man was seen swimming alone before becoming distressed and disappearing beneath the water. Nearby beachgoers rushed to assist, but the victim had already disappeared,” she says.
Shomongula says members of the public tried to help, but the swimmer could not be reached in time.
A search team was later deployed but had to stop due to poor visibility at night.
“It is further alleged that a rescue team searched for the victim but was unable to locate him due to the darkness, however, the search will continue tomorrow,” she says.
The authorities have appealed to the public for assistance in identifying the victim.
“Anyone with information that may assist in identifying the victim is requested to contact detective senior inspector Rose Tjihavero at 081 413 7105 or the nearest police station,” Shomongula says.
Police investigations are ongoing.
