Namibian Police inspector general Joseph Shikongo has urged drivers and road users to be attentive as they return from their holidays.
Shikongo was speaking during a visit to the Windhoek-Okahandja roadblock on Tuesday, where he advised tourists and road users to adhere to road safety measures.
“We want to caution our people to exercise consciousness as they are driving and preparing their journey back to their destinations,” he said.
Shikongo expressed disappointment in the number of car accidents and fatalities recorded during the Christmas period. He highlighted that over 200 car crashes were recorded in the country as of last week, with 487 individuals injured and 41 fatalities.
“This does not look good. Let us avoid drinking and driving, get enough rest and avoid overtaking to save lives. I want to see every Namibian returning to their destinations safely. We all want to go into 2025, see our children go back to school and their parents returning to their workplaces safely,” he added.
