Police identify Henties children feared to have drowned

DANGEROUS … Henties Bay is well known for its sun, sea and sand, but the ocean is notorious for its rip-currents in the area, and great care has to be taken by bathers who intend to swim there. Photo: Adam Hartman

Two girls from Henties Bay who are feared to have drowned on Friday afternoon have been identified by the police as Hilia Rashmie (10) and Mary-Anne Mimie Mbok (11).

“The incident occurred when the two girls, along with their friends, ventured into the sea between 12h00 and 13h00. A strong wave swept them away, and despite their efforts, they struggled in vain,” Erongo police spokesperson inspector Ileni Shapumba reported.

The families of the girls have been notified, and a search operation involving members of the Namibian Police, community volunteers and family members is under way in an attempt to find the missing children.

Shapumba expressed “deep sympathy” for the families and the affected community, and emphasised the need for caution around bodies of water.

“It is crucial to exercise caution near the sea. We discourage swimming, but if necessary, it should be done at designated places under the supervision of lifeguards,” said Shapumba.
