Pirates deny ‘new’ topflight identity

FYI … Orlando Pirates is part of the first division and not the premiership, the club says. Photo: Namibia Premiership

Orlando Pirates are not masquerading as Civics or any other team in the Debmarine Namibia Premiership, club chairperson Wilfred !Naibab said on Friday.

The Buccaneers are in fact part of the Southern Stream First Division (SSFD) roster, having been relegated from the topflight last season, he said.

!Naibab’s assertion comes amid reports that Pirates acquired the Civilians’ premiership status to continue campaigning in the country’s top division.

Pirates are also said to have rebranded to Buccaneers FC to mitigate copyright infringements and opposition from club stalwarts opposed to the changes.

“To address the speculation, the current and legitimate owners of Orlando Pirates firmly clarify that the club has neither authorised nor recognised any transaction to purchase another team’s Premier League status,” !Naibab said.

“Orlando Pirates maintains its integrity and will adhere to procedural requirements, continuing its journey in the SSFD for the 2024/2025 football season.”

!Naibab assured supporters that the club is focused on reclaiming its premiership status through winning promotion from the SSFD. “Despite this setback, Orlando Pirates is committed to a swift and resolute comeback,” he said.

“We promise to put the Orlando Pirates back on track next season and assure our broader supporter base that despite the challenges of the previous season, Orlando Pirates will emerge stronger and reclaim our competitive place in the Premier League,” said the club’s management.

“Your support, collaboration and unity embody the spirit of the ‘People’s Team’. Together, we will rise from these challenges and rebuild a legacy of strength, pride and excellence for Orlando Pirates.”
