PDM hits over 100 000 votes

THE Popular Democratic Movement has gained over 100 000 votes for the National Assembly elections with 100 constituencies confirmed.

The latest results confirmed by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) show the ruling Swapo party in the lead with over 425 000 votes (66%) followed by the PDM with slightly over 100 000 votes (15%).

The party got about 43 000 votes, gaining five parliamentary seats, when it became the official opposition status in 2014.

The PDM is in second place, followed by the Landless People’s Movement (LPM) in the race to parliament which so far has gained 33 000 votes (5,6%).

UDF comes in fourth place with 12 200 votes (1,9%), followed by the All People’s Party (APP) which has 11 000 (1,8%) of the total votes cast for the National Assembly elections.

About 648 000 votes have been counted for the National Assembly elections so far.

Other 10 parties in the National Assembly contest gained a combined 57 900 (or 9%) of the votes.

Ninety-six parliamentary seats are up for grabs during this election.

Members of the National Assembly are directly elected through a system of closed list proportional representation and serve a five-year term.

Eight additional members to the National Assembly are appointed by the president.
