SPIRITUAL leader Ngeno Nakamhela has requested local musicians planning to attend the funeral of their late colleague YT De Wet on Saturday to bring their guns along and bury them.
Nakamhela, a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia (ELRCRN) and the head of the group Namibian Men For Change, wants musicians to bury their firearms to symbolise their condemnation of the way De Wet ended his life and that of his late girlfriend, Elsé Ndapanda Eigowas, last week. “What I’d like to see is a number of these young men having the courage to show that they don’t condone what happened. Not the person, but the actions he took,” Nakamhela told The Namibian yesterday.De Wet (30), real name Titus Antonio, ended the life of his 23-year-old girlfriend last Wednesday by shooting her in the head on a Windhoek street pavement before turning the gun on himself.Eigowas died on the spot, while De Wet died of his injuries in an ambulance on the way to the Katutura State Hospital. The event left the couple’s two-year-old daughter orphaned.”I feel very sad over what happened, sad for the families of both (Eigowas) and De Wet himself,” Nakamela said.”I have always been very proud of our local artists, and I especially admire the young ones who are making such a mark on the arts. And my appeal is for them to step up and show themselves as positive role models.”He said given the popularity and influence local artists have on the youth, De Wet’s final actions have dangerous potential, thus his request to fellow musicians to unite against gacts of evil “.”I don’t know whether the gun he used was licensed to him.Nevertheless, my appeal goes to artists with licensed and unlicensed guns.Take these guns and let them be buried in that same grave. This is my appeal, ” Nakamhela said.”What I’d like to see is a number of these young men having the courage to show that they don’t condone what happened. This is my appeal, ” Nakamhela said.
