Oshana records 12% crime reduction

The Oshana region has recorded a 12% reduction in overall reported crime, with 12 484 cases reported in the year under review.

Notably, rape and domestic violence cases have declined by 7.1%, with 39 rape cases and 130 domestic violence cases reported during the period.

This is according to Oshana governor Hofni Iipinge during the state of the region address at Oshakati on Friday.

“I am, however, concerned about the delayed reporting of gender-based and domestic violence incidents. Too often, these cases are handled informally within families rather than through legal channels. We call upon all residents to prioritise the safety and rights of victims by reporting such cases promptly,” he said.

Iipinge noted that despite these challenges, the police continue to lead proactive awareness campaigns and community policing initiatives.

“Their commitment, boosted by active community engagement, ensures that peace and justice remain the cornerstones of Oshana’s development. We are immensely grateful for the peace and stability that have prevailed in the Oshana region since Namibia’s independence in 1990. This peaceful environment has provided fertile ground for democratic participation, social development, and economic growth,” he said.

Iipinge commended the Oshana Regional Security Cluster, coordinated by the Namibian Police, for its continued dedication to maintaining law and order.

He called upon residents to strengthen cooperation with the police and Anti-Corruption Commission in the shared battle against crime, corruption, and gender-based violence.
