Opuwo Youth Choir wins two medals at Mauritius choir games

The Opuwo Youth Choir has won two medals at the African Asia Pacific Choir Games in Mauritius.

Sponsored by the Lindholm Charity Organisation, the youth choir secured a gold medal in the open competition category and a silver medal in the Grand Prix of Nations on Tuesday.

The African Asia Pacific Choir Games and Grand Prix of Nations are currently underway in Mauritius and will conclude on 5 October.

According to the organisation’s chairman, Markus Treve, the sponsorship covered flights, participation and application fees, as well as management and technical support.

“There were other sponsors as well, it was not just us,” he says.

He adds that the sponsorship served as a motivation for young people to gain international experience and showcase their talents.

Beyond financial and technical support, Treve says the organisation will again support the choir to take part in the World Choir Games, taking place next August in Sweden.

Treve notes that the choir’s achievement is significant for Namibia and Opuwo as a whole, as it reflects international recognition.

“It is important that they have been recognised for something they are talented at. This will help them grow and achieve something,” Treve adds.

The organisation also supports soccer teams, karate clubs, orphanages, after-school education for boys and girls and scholarships for pupils from low-income families at Omaruru.

“We are not only looking at culture but also at the community of Omaruru and helping where we can,” he says.

Other sponsors include the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, the Directorate of Arts, the Environmental Investment Fund, the Opuwo Town Council, the Office of the Presidency, the National Arts Council, the Kunene Regional Council, the Macedonia Parish and the College of the Arts.

The Lindholm Charity Organisation helps strengthen people, the community and nature at a local level. It focuses on direct assistance for people in need and education for children at Omaruru, with plans to expand to other areas.
