On-the-hoof donation for children

GOBABIS – The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare and the United Nations International Children’s Education Fund (Unicef) have donated five cows and a bull to San orphans and vulnerable children in the Donkerbos area.

About 26 Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) will benefit from the donation, which was handed to San Chief Daniel Skoe and the community development committee last Tuesday. In an interview with Nampa yesterday, social worker in the Ministry, Rahimisa Ndjarakana, said they had donated the animals, as none of the 26 children had birth certificates, a prerequisite to qualify for OVC grants. She said the six animals were valued at N$30 000, and the community was expected to make sure that the animals “multiplied” before they started selling them in order to generate income for the children. The development committee includes the principal of Donkerbos, where most of the children attend school. They will play a part in jointly looking after the animals.Meanwhile, Ndjarakana announced that they planned to make a donation soon to a Gobabis-based sewing project and a bakery project at Tjaka Ben Hur in the Kalahari Constituency. The Selma Sewing project and Tjaka Bakery are expected to receive N$10 000 each. The social worker said the Selma Sewing project was set to produce tracksuits and uniforms for OVCs in the Omaheke Region, while the bakery would extend the range of its equipment by, amongst others, buying an environmentally friendly stove. The project is expected to donate 20 loaves of bread a day to OVCs at the Mpe Thuto Primary School and the surrounding community.A similar expectation applies to the Selma project. It will donate 20 uniforms and tracksuit to the OVCs.NampaIn an interview with Nampa yesterday, social worker in the Ministry, Rahimisa Ndjarakana, said they had donated the animals, as none of the 26 children had birth certificates, a prerequisite to qualify for OVC grants. It will donate 20 uniforms and tracksuit to the OVCs.Nampa
