FORMER Rally for Democracy and Progress town councillor at Omuthiya, Moses Amukoto, has accused officials of the Omuthiya Town Council of being corrupt.
This comes after president Hage Geingob requested people complaining about corruption to name the corrupt people during a town hall meeting at Omuthiya in the Oshikoto region on Monday.
Geingob said: “Reveal the names. Rumour-mongering should stop. I advise people to lay charges.”
When a youth activist, Aune Vaino, claimed Omuthiya officials were corrupt, Geingob challenged Vaino to name the people she was referring to. This she did not do.
The president then explained that should one name people, they should know that they risk a chance of being sued.
“Telling a lie is the biggest corruption. Let us not use the word loosely. You are destroying names of people by gossiping around accusing them of corruption,” he said.
Amukoto took to the podium and accused some senior officials of the Omuthiya Town Council and the Oshikoto Regional Council of being corrupt.
Geingob then told Amukoto that he was live on air, adding that if he could stand for what he was saying he should go ahead.
Amukoto continued: “I can stand for what I am saying.” He went on to claim that a senior town council official was corrupt, citing the official’s alleged ownership of five plots of land as evidence.
Amukoto said the compensation system was also faulty and was being exploited by corrupt officials. His concerns were also shared by reverend Eino Nangula, who said corruption was rife at Omuthiya.
The accusations of corruption come in the wake of an Anti-Corruption Commission investigation at the Omuthiya Town Council. New Era reported on Monday that the Omuthiya Town Council is being probed by ACC investigators following allegations of corruption against local authority councillors.
