OKALONDO Senior Secondary School in the Omusati Region lifted the Coca-Cola Youth Cup after they defeated PK De Villiers Senior Secondary School 3-2 at Keetmanshoop on Saturday.
Hundreds of football supporters who braved the freezing weather flocked to the town’s J Stephanus stadium in Tseiblaagte to watch the Coca-Cola Youth Cup final. With only 16 minutes on the clock, A Shikoyeni hit the back of the net after he capitalised on a cross from the left wing delivered by Pele Pengeho to give Okalondo the lead. The talented striker Pengeho, who had the PK De Villiers defence on their toes, again created an opportunity for E Abiator who banked in a close-range shot in the 25th minute to extend Okalondo’s lead.Within seven minutes after Okalondo extended lead, Willy Jossop sent the PK De Villier’s crowd into raptures after he tapped in a cross delivered by left winger Antonny Oarum to trim the lead.Spurred by the goal, the PK De Villiers boys equalised through Ismael Kooper who tapped in the second goal after being set by Oarum, following a one-two between him and Jossop.Shedding PK De Villiers’ hopes to be crowned as the Coca-Cola Youth Cup champions, Pengeho sealed the winning goal deep in the second half for his school. In the qualifying match for the final against Nelumbo Senior Secondary School, Pengoho scored six goals.Pengeho also walked away with the Player of the Tournament award, while PK De Villier’s Jossop scooped the Top Goal Scorer award.Jossop scored seven goals throughout the tournament. The boys of PK De Villiers tried their best to draw level with Okalondo, but to no avail as the northerners seemed to have more stamina in contrast to the fatigue which could be seen on the faces of some PK De Villiers players.Jossop had three golden opportunities to equalise, but wasted all.Okalondo SSS pocketed N$80 000 for winning the tournament on top of the gold medals, while runners-up PK De Villiers received N$50 000.Mariental High School was awarded the third prize of N$20 000 while Khorab SSS from Otavi received N$10 000 in fourth spot.Coca-Cola’s Operations Manager, India Katjivena, described the tournament as a huge success. He said schools are benefiting a lot from the tournament, as prize money is used to buy equipment for the schools.”All schools are actually benefiting because after the inception of the tournament in 2004, none of the participating schools has won the tournament in consecutive years,” he said.
