“We are delighted to announce the signing of Namibian international defender Ryan Nyambe on an initial one-year contract,” Wigan announced on its website on Wednesday.
“The 24-year-old Nyambe joins Latics after spending 11 years with Blackburn Rovers, having joined the Championship side as a 13-year-old before making over 200 first team appearances,” it said.
“A versatile and athletic defender who has represented his country in the African Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers during the past three years, Nyambe brings further Championship experience to Latics”; backline,” it added.
Nyambe will wear the number 2 shirt for Latics and will join them ahead of their final pre-season fixture at the DW Stadium on Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday.
Speaking to Latics TV, Nyambe revealed that conversations with the manager Leam Richardson were key to him making his decision to join Latics, despite interest from several clubs.
“I”;m looking forward to the challenge,” he said.
“First of all, I had a sit down with the manager (Leam Richardson) and he came across as a family man. I have seen all the players that he has worked with, and he has improved them so much. I think that he can help me so much with my game.
“The team”;s style of play is also quite unique so I”;m looking forward to that. ”
Despite still being in the relative infancy of his career, Nyambe has over 200 career appearances to his name and adds further strength to Richardson”;s defensive options.
Having played the majority of his time at Ewood Park in the Championship, the 24-year-old spoke about the importance of doing the right things both on and off the pitch in order to enjoy a successful season.
“The Championship is a very hard league. For me personally, I”;ve played so many games because I have tried to do things properly.
“It”;s going to be a difficult season, but as long as we do everything right, I think we”;ve got a chance.”
Nyambe is certainly no stranger to the DW Stadium, having lined up for Rovers against Latics in the multiple battles between the two sides over the years. Having experienced the excellent atmosphere first-hand, Nyambe is looking forward to playing in front of the Latics faithful in the near future.
“Every team we played against Wigan, it was very interesting. The atmosphere was always great, and that”;s what I am looking forward to (experience)! “
