The Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) has suspended its vice chancellor, Erold Naomab, following months of tension between him and the governing council.
Naomab was suspended on Tuesday night.
In a letter dated 8 October, seen by The Namibian, Nust governing council chairperson Leake Hangala informes minister of education, innovation, youth, sport, arts and culture Sanet Steenkamp that they acted in the “best interest of the institution and to preserve the integrity of Nust’s governance framework”.
Hangala told The Namibian that “I can’t comment now. I will comment later”.
The suspension comes after the council informed Naomab in April that his employment contract, which ends on 31 December, would not be renewed, a decision that prompted him to seek the intervention of Steenkamp.
The minister, however, reportedly told him she could not overrule the council’s decision.
Naomab, who was appointed in 2020 after a contentious selection process, has had a strained relationship with the council in recent months. Read more in tomorrow’s edition.
