Nujoma remembered for toughness against apartheid

Founding president Sam Nujoma’s toughness and resilience in the face of brutal apartheid South African soldiers encouraged many Namibians to look injustice in the face.

This was said by the president of the Namibia Emerging Commercial Farmers’ Union (NECFU), Ndahafa Nghifindaka, in a statement issued on Monday to mourn Nujoma.

“What a loss to a nation desperate for true patriots and heroes,” she said, adding that the NECFU was joining the nation in mourning Namibia’s revered leader and founding president.

“He was the quintessential social activist, and a leader who cared about people and service-centred politics of service,” said Nghifindaka.

“On behalf of NECFU, its national executive committee, entire leadership and members, we extend our deepest sympathy to Nujoma’s family, Swapo and to all Namibians. May his soul rest in peace,” she said.

Nujoma, who was born on 12 May 1929, will be laid to rest at the Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek on 1 March.

Several memorial services were held in his honour in different regions, including at his home village Etunda in the Omusati region.

Other services were held at Eenhana, Rundu, Katima Mulilo and Grootfontein, with others set for Walvis bay and Keetmanshoop.
