As Namibia entered the first official day of mourning founding president Sam Nujoma yesterday, corporations and citizens continue to send messages honouring of his legacy.
Telecom Namibia Limited joined the nation in mourning Nujoma, describing him as a pioneer of Namibia’s development plan, Vision 2023.
In a statement, the company credits Nujoma with recognising the crucial role of telecommunications in building a modern economy.
“His reign ushered in an era of improving access to information communication technology (ICT) facilities for all members of the Namibian society, particularly historically disadvantaged communities.
Under his leadership, Telecom Namibia embarked on a path towards introducing modern ICT services digital transformation, thereby fostering a telecommunications sector that empowers businesses, connects communities, and drives socio-economic progress,” says the statement.
The the national telecommunications operator says Nujoma’s commitment to innovation and national development paved the way for a future where every Namibian can access reliable communication services.
“We honour his immense contributions and remain committed to upholding his vision of a connected Namibia,” Telecom says.
Meanwhile, Bank Windhoek managing director Baronice Hans describes Nujoma as a visionary leader and liberation hero who dedicated his life to the freedom, unity, and development of his beloved nation.
“It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Namibia’s founding president, Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to founding first lady of the Republic of Namibia Kovambo Nujoma, his family, loved ones, and all Namibians during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace,” Hans says.
Ombu Capital chief executive and former Standard Bank Namibia chief executive Vetumbuavi Mungunda says the founding president’s life personified sacrifice, selflessness, dedication, commitment and focus.
“These are all very important values that should remain not only a reminder of his legacy and contribution to our country’s struggles and independence, but also guiding principles and a call to duty as we work on building our nation toward prosperity, freedom, unity and justice,” he says.
In a statement, the Namibia Local Businesses Association (Naloba) says: “We are deeply saddened by the departure of our liberation icon and freedom fighter, a true nationalist, a pan-Africanist and a true hero of the Namibian revolution.
“He was a true, dedicated and inspiring leader among our African nations and the globe. His legacy will live with us forever.”
Naloba called for resilience and unity among the Namibian nation and the world as Namibians pay tribute and celebrate the life of the founding president.
