Nedbank Namibia will sponsor 10 students pursuing a national certificate and another 10 students pursuing a national diploma at the Agra Agricultural Academy with N$560 000.
The academy offers students qualifications in plant and animal production, advanced farm management, agricultural extension, and agri-sales and services.
The funds will cover each student’s registration and tuition fees.
Minister of agriculture, fisheries, water and land reform Inge Zaamwani-Kamwi, delivering a speech on behalf of prime minister Elijah Ngarure at the handover ceremony yesterday, said food sufficiency is one of the key priorities of the government, and support from corporations in the country is needed.
She stated that the agricultural sector has been identified as one of the priority areas in Vision 2030 and the five-year National Development Plans.
“As a country, we consider the agricultural sector a priority and an enabler that will contribute to our socio-economic development,” said Zaamwani-Kamwi.
Nedbank managing director Martha Murorua said the aim of these bursaries is to encourage young people to pursue qualifications in agriculture.
“By investing in practical education, we hope to inspire the current and next generation to see agriculture as a vital and rewarding career path. Practical degrees equip students with hands-on experience and real-world skills,” said Murorua.
Agra chief executive Arnold Klein said the company has paid out N$61 million in dividends to its shareholders.
“Agra has a shareholding of more than 3 800 shareholders [of which] 75% are active farmers in Namibia. This year, we project our profit after tax to grow between 45% and 55%,” said Klein.
