NCRST hands over facilities to Cosdec

ONDANGWA – The National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) handed over facilities for the Pearl Millet/Olute Food Research Project to the Community Skills Development Centre (Cosdec) at Ondangwa, Oshana region on Friday.

The facilities include a hall, guesthouse and two production buildings.

Chairperson of the Community Skills Development Foundation (Cosdef) Board, Nahas Angula received the facilities from NCRST general manager, Vincent Nowaseb.

Nawaseb said after the handover that NCRST has been running the Pearl Millet/Olute Food Project, which is engaged in mahangu food production, since 2014.

Mahangu flour, biscuits, chips and snacks are produced at the project.

“NCRST will continue providing technical support to the project after the handover of the facilities to Cosdec here today,” Nawaseb said, adding the project is aimed mostly at poverty eradication and to add value to mahangu products.

Speaking at the event, Angula said the Olute Food Research Project is about developing and modernising local food such as mahangu, beans and groundnuts to ensure nutrition.

According to Angula, Cosdec was introduced to impart skills to the youth who drop out of the formal education so that they too become skilled and are able to create self-employment.

Angula initiated the Olute Food Project when he was the Higher Education Minister. He wants Namibia to add value to local food, ensure food security and get rid of the dependence on imports.
