REHOBOTH – The Hardap Region’s u20 Newspaper Cup team has warned opponents in their group not to expect a ‘walk in the park’ when they clash in the competition.
The Namibian Newspaper Cup tournament supported by Nedbank will be hosted in Swakopmund in the Erongo Region from 14 to 17 April.
The event, an annual fixture on the Namibian sporting calendar, attracts thousands of visitors from all 14 regions to the host region.
Defending champions, Oshana, will tackle Omusati on day one and Hardap on the second day.
Hardap won the competition in 2006 against their fiercest rivals and then host, ||Kharas Region. They finished as runners-up in 2004 and 2005.
In preparation, the Hardap team has lined up friendlies this weekend in Mariental against ||Kharas Second Division outfit and winner of the ||Kharas DebMarine matches, Young Beauties Football Club (FC); Hardap DebMarine winners Bee Bob Brothers; and Hardap Second Division champions Reho Madrid FC.
Team manager of Hardap, Ivan Pieters said the matches are organised to get their formations right and work on ball passing and other areas of the game.
Pieters said their coach Christy ||Guruseb is working out game plans and formations to get the team to play the “Hardap way”.
“With an experienced coach like him I don’t see any reason not to win the tournament,” he remarked.
Amongst other teams invited for the friendlies are the ||Kharas Region u20 team and Hardap Namibian Police Force FC.
The matches will be preceded by u13, u15 and u17 clashes and will be played over two days at the Mariental Showgrounds.
