NBC reinstates suspended editor

Anna Nicodemus

The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has reinstated executive editor Anna Nicodemus, after suspending her over comments on president-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s health in an interview with a South African media house.

In a document outlining the outcome of her disciplinary hearing dated 18 March, the NBC says Nicodemus’ suspension has been lifted.

“After properly [accessing] the findings of the chairperson, we hereby inform you that your suspension has been lifted with immediate effect.

“You may appeal against this decision if you wish, within five working days of receipt of this letter,” the document states.

Nicodemus yesterday confirmed her reinstatement, but could not comment further.

“I can confirm that l am back at work. I have been reinstated, but I have no further comment,” she said.

Her legal representative, Daniel Nadunya, said justice has been served on both sides.

“I know that the NBC as an institution has a progressive disciplinary policy and procedure in place.

“When prudently applied, as is the case now, justice is not only served, but also seen to be served in the interest of both the corporation and its employees. Clearly, the NBC has the capacity to resolve its issues,” he said.

The Namibian recently reported that Nicodemus is facing either a dismissal or final warning after being found guilty on three charges.

Calling Nandi-Ndaitwah “old” was included in the charges emanating from an interview Nicodemus participated in with South African news channel Newzroom Afrika in December.

She discussed Nandi-Ndaitwah’s health, among other topics.

Nicodemus was found guilty of insubordination and disregarding cooperation or departmental rules, regulations and standard instructions.

Another charge indicates that Nicodemus’ statements were unfounded, speculative and constituted personal commentary.

She was also charged with discrimination against women, following her statement on Nandi-Ndaitwah’s age and health.

This is according to the disciplinary hearing that took place on 23 January.
