Can you bake? Want to win a prize? Here’s your chance! Bakpro is offering amateur and professional bakers a platform to showcase their baking talents and walk away with cash prizes.
The Bakpro National Baking Competition was recently launched with the aim of encourage Namibians in their numbers, to bake. ‘The winner in the amateur category will receive a total of N$30 000, while the winning bakery receives Bakpro products to the value of N$20 000 and participating bakers each receive N$5 000,’ explained Margareth Gustavo, Marketing Manager at Namib Mills. In the amateur category the runner-up will receive a total of N$10 000, while the second runner-up will receive N$5 000. In the Professional baker (Pro-baker) category, the runner-up and third place bakers will receive Bakpro products to the value of N$5 000 and participating bakers receive N$1 000 each.The amateur baker category is for someone who bakes for their personal satisfaction and that doesn’t work professionally in the baking industry. Therefore, anyone who absolutely loves baking can enter by purchasing a 5kg Bakpro Cake Flour pack in stores, completing the entry form and sending it to Namib Mills or by entering via the Bakpro website. ‘Entrants enter by baking a Madeira loaf and bringing the baked product to selected venues for judging,’ explained Gustavo. One winner per town will go through to the finals, which will be held in Windhoek during October. In the pro-bakers category, bakeries can enter two of their best bakers. They will need to bake croissants and bring the baked product to the selected venues for judging. ‘In this category, one bakery per town will go through to the finals,’ said Gustavo. The judging will take place in the following towns: Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Ongwediva, Keetmanshoop, Gobabis and Otjiwarongo. ‘We are also proud to announce that a surprise guest will host the finals, which will add even more excitement to the competition.’ The judges for the regionals and the finals are: Hantie Jansen, Andrew Muller and Rodger du Plessis. Roger Daugherty, one of Namibia’s favourite bakers, will be in Namibia serving as an external judge at the finals.
