ATUSHE Namweya’s passion for pushing weights paid dividends over the weekend as he took top honours at the Nucleus Health and Fitness Centre Bodybuilding Championships in Windhoek.
Namweya received the overall winner’s prize for packing the most muscle, ahead of second placed Jose Gaspan and David Nuuyuni in third. Six other contestants also took part in the inaugural event.
The bodybuilder said he was happy to win the prize and was looking forward to many more competitions.
‘I’m honoured,’ said Namweya, who also doubles as a musician.
‘I’m always in the gym. I do this for fun and when the competition came up I decided to juts give it a shot.’
Event organiser and former Namibia Bodybuilding Association president, Bill Adams, said bodybuilding is slowly making a comeback in Namibia after being dormant for more than 20 years. Adams said there is a growing interest among body builders to revive the once famed sport code.
‘We want to get registered with the Namibia Sports Commission,’ Adams said.
‘For now we are just planning to have local competitions, but in time we will want to participate in international events again.
‘We want to take it to all the regions in the near future.’
The next bodybuilding contest is planned for February next year.
